[ficlet] Smoking on Silqan

A bit of Star Wars-esque original fiction...

Title: Smoking on Silqan
Author: [insanejournal.com profile] babygray
Pairing: None.
Warnings: Typos. No beta.
Disclaimer: This is just fanfiction, non-profit and just for fun.
Notes: I love Star Wars, but every time I try to write some fanfiction for it, it ends up like something from the Extended Universe as opposed to fanfiction proper. Does that make sense?
Word Count: 256
Summary: A spacer takes a break.

I tugged at the collar of my coat and fumbled with the pack for a Ceral. The air outside the 'bay was cold and dry and uncomfortably thin, but smoking wasn't allowed inside. And I needed the break.

The thin-limbed local by the wall gave me a disgusted look as I put the Ceral to my lips. I left it dangling there as I searched for a light. The local strode back into the 'bay, shooting me one last nasty look as the doors closed. I couldn't tell whether the local had been female or male.

Guess that it didn't matter.

"Don't let it get to you," the old spacer said later, when I told him about it during the evening meal. "The Silquienines are a touchy bunch when it comes to off-worlders."

"What do you mean? Are they xenophobic or something?"

The old man guffawed. "Who isn't?" he said. "Muh, they just think we off-worlders are scum, but since they don't allow their people to leave the planet, they're legally forced to depend on us."

Legally... huh...

The Ceral tasted off as I smoked it. The was a tanginess to the aftertaste that made my eyes water. They had gone off, probably. These were the last from the carton I had bought back in the Core nearly two standard months ago.

I checked the use-by date printed on the box. They had be stale for half a year.

I took a long drag and stared at the golden sky.
