Matryoshka Snape and Harry

Here is the results of the hours upon hours of work I've put into these dolls this week: Snape and Harry as Russian Nesting Dolls.

The basic body came from a pattern from a calendar. Everything else I had to draw out by hand (or trace, in the case of Severus' flowers). The hard part for me was being decisive enough to put it all together. The tricky, meticulous bits (particularly Snape's face) were not nearly as hard as I feared. In fact, it was almost relaxing, making them.

All in all, I'm glad they're finished. Just don't think I'll be making more of them any time soon.

The flowers... I don't have many any readers, but if you can name the flowers, I'll give you a prize of some sort (not the actual dolls, probably, but...) I guess I can keep that as my little secret for now under the spoilers tag.

Harry's decorated with holly flowers. Severus is decorated with monkshood. Or is it wolfsbane...

I posted a larger version of this picture on dA [link].

I am absolutely amazed at how much these look like 1) Matryoshka nesting dolls and 2) Snape and Harry. Yes, I know that was the intent, but they're wonderful recreations, all the way around. I am not great with flowers at all, and didn't Google this or look them up, but I suppose you mean the flowers on the dolls and not what appear to be violets that they are sitting in. lol. I'll go for forget-me-nots and eidelweis, just to be interesting, though those aren't the kind of girls' names JKR favored and decidedly not the flowers actually on the dolls themselves.

You do know you should do a whole Hogwarts line of these, don't you? If you did real nesting dolls, you could go from Grawp to Dobby. ;-)

And boy do I admire you for getting out in the park to photograph these!

First, thank you for the rec. Wasn't expecting that. :) (It makes me wish I wrote up the post a bit better.) I'm glad you like them.

Forget-me-nots and edelweiss are nice, romantic suggestions. Shame I didn't think of that. ... A Hogwarts line? I don't think I can make so many. (But it's making me think of making a Team Potter set (Hagrid, Ron, Hermione, and Dobby), or a Weasley family set... Ahhh!)

I couldn't help but take them to the park. They look so cute among flowers.

Here on Suitesamba's rec - these are delightful! I love Severus in particular. I'm rubbish with flowers, so I don't think I will try guessing in case I embarrass myself horribly! :D

I'm glad you like them. :) It's okay - I'm crap at flowers, too.

I saw [livejournal.com profile] suitesamba's rec and had to come and take a look. They are adorable and the detail is extraordinary. I'm super impressed!

Of course, I had to try and figure out the flowers--Harry's at first I thought looked like strawberries but those have 5 petals. Instead I'll say they are holly flowers (like these). Severus's-I know they aren't asphodel-but they reminded me of bluebells. Alas I have no better guess there. I was hoping for a blue lily of some kind but didn't see anything that really matched. LOL

Oh- holly! That's a great guess given the wand!

Those white ones are pretty tricky--I mean they also look like the dogwoods in my yard! :) But I figured there was probably some meaning to them. ;)

I'm glad you like them. :)

And you're right - Harry's decorated with holly. I thought for half a second to go with a lily, but that would have been the obvious choice for both of them. Severus's - I wish that I thought of asphodel first. They're easier to turn into felt than the flower I went with.

Do you wish to claim your prize? I can offer you a fic or a postcard (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/babygray/media/Photo2013-05-06130526.jpg.html)....

Ack, sorry for the late reply. This got buried in my email. Anyway, whatever works easiest for you. If you already have a postcard and don't need to make a new one, that's totally fine. I'm easy. LOL

*laughs* The postcard would be the easiest. Just let me know where I can send it. :)

Those are fabulous. The detail work is striking. I keep thinking I should make some Snarry crafts, but I am just so lazy. ;D

Thank you very much. And if you ever make some Snarry crafts, I'd love to see. I'm sure they'll turn out well. :)

Wow! These are amazing!! I'm, unfortunately, not very talented myself when it comes to everything crafty, so I'm awe of your talent! What a lovely idea, and it is so obvious who they are, as they're so well-made!! Fantastic!!

[identity profile] babygray-dam.livejournal.com 2013-05-10 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! I don't know if I'm actually talented craft-wise, but I did enjoy making them. I'm just glad that my silly idea came out better than I hoped. :D
