[fic] No Loan

Title: No Loan
Author:
babygray
Pairing: Hilde and Duo
Warning: Pre-EW, I think... typos and a lot of internal monologue.
Notes: The beginning came as an idea for challenge #105 ('ambition'), but the end didn't come without #106. Not sure at all that what I've written adheres to canon or reality. That, and the title makes me think of Cake.
Word Count: 450
Summary: Hilde and Duo are trying to start up their own salvaging business, but the banks are being quite cautious.
Originally posted at gw500 for challenge #106, 'please'.
Hilde and Duo sat silently as the banker explained the 'problem'. She could just faintly feel Duo's twitching foot by her, the only part of him that wasn't stoically still. Perhaps he, too, was suppressing the desire to just get up and storm out of the bank without a second glance.
In rather clipped, surgical words, the woman in the well-cut, dark suit explained why the bank had rejected their application. Hilde had already started to tune her out. After applying at, and being rejected by, three banks already, she had an idea as to what the banker was saying.
Neither she nor Duo had any credit to speak of, and, with no property to put up for collateral, they were having way too much trouble trying to get their own business started. The fact that they were both underage, and that Duo was who he was, probably didn't help in their favor.
They had discussed jumpstarting their endeavor some other way. Duo had squirreled away a little fortune during the war, more than enough to live on and start up their own salvaging business at the same time. But, in the end, they decided against it. The money wasn't exactly gained legally, and that wouldn't mix well with Duo's status as a former Gundam pilot. They really didn't need the hassle.
Unfortunately, the hassle of doing things legitimately was grinding her nerves out of existence.
The banker stood up, signaling that their meeting was over. Hilde and Duo stood up as well, each courteously shaking the banker's hand in turn. Even this was done on automatic, as Hilde was still trying to the figure out a way to get around this bothersome money issue, causing her to grip the woman's hand a little more strongly than decency allowed.
Perhaps they could figure out a way to launder Duo's little fortune and use it anyway.
Perhaps they could call in a favor or two.
Perhaps they should be all doe-eyed and 'pretty please' at the next bank they try.
As they stepped out of the bank and into the bright, colonial sunshine, Duo loosened the dark tie he had worn for the occasion. "Well, that was heaps of fun," he said, the sarcasm thick in his voice.
"You got another plan?" she asked, holding her most conservative purse in front of her with both hands. They began to walk up the street the bank was facing.
"Besides burning down a few banks?" he said with a dark chuckle, his hands in his pockets.
"Maybe we should go get some lunch," she said as she threaded her arm around his in a guiding manner. They could plan their next move then.
