A Harry Potter ficlet...
Title: Confession Behind the School Building
Author:
babygray
Pairing: Snape/Harry... sort of?
Warnings: Typos. No beta. The usual, really.
Disclaimer: This is just fanfiction, non-profit and just for fun.
Notes: Watching Hanamaru Kindergarten the other day, and they mentioned the cliche: love confessions behind the school buildings. Hence the title, and this little ficlet.
Word Count: 623
Summary: Harry returns from the Weasleys with news. Neither Snape nor Potter seem happy about that.
The snow has stopped, and Potter was returning from the Burrow. Severus could see Potter as he made his way through the knee-high snow, his form black against the white ground, his wand lazily doing away with the snow in his path.
Was he simply Banishing it away? Or was he melting it with impunity?
Severus wanted to go down and meet him. Something in his chest ached, knowing Potter had returned.
He would not go down, however. He could not. He had too much pride to go running to the Entrance to greet Potter like some love-sick pet...
Potter slowed his footsteps, stopping almost halfway from the Doors. He looked up, his eyes seemingly directed at Snape's tower, as if he could feel Snape's eyes on him.
... Could Potter see him? Was Snape a black shape against the yellow candlelight, or was he more? Could he see Severus' face? Could he see Severus'...
Potter turned towards the Pitch, moving at a much slower pace through the snow. Severus had already draped a heavy cloak over his shoulders and was out of the office before he even realized what he was doing.
The hallways were cold, and he stopped by the gargoyle, hesitating. Rush out there now, and Potter would get the wrong impression. He was not as stupid as Severus tried to pretend; he'd figure it out eventually.
He should go back up to the office and leave Potter to his brooding. But his chest ached to see him.
He stormed down the halls, cursing himself for being a fool.
~~~
Severus followed Potter's trail across the Pitch and along the edge of the Forest, finally finding the idiot behind the greenhouses, staring off at nothing. Potter glanced over at him for a moment before looking away.
"I didn't think you would..." Potter said, his voice trailing off.
"... I would what?" Severus said, staring at Potter's profile.
"Come out in the snow for me," Potter said.
"I was out for a stroll, Potter," Severus said. "Finding you is just an unhappy coincidence."
"I see," Potter said, unconvinced, but he didn't push the issue. Severus flexed his fingers against the cold.
"Did you... enjoy yourself at the Weasleys'?" Severus said, mostly to give himself a reason to keep looking at Potter's face.
Potter laughed hollowly. "Oh yes, I had a wonderful time..." His words died weakly as they left his lips. He stared down at his boots, a lost, agitated expression on his face for a brief moment before an idiotic smile took its place. "Ginny proposed to me."
Severus's heart skipped a beat. It felt like he had been punched in the abdomen. "Is that so?" he managed to say over the ringing in his ears. "And you said yes, I assume?"
Potter looked at Severus, a stricken look in his eyes, before looking away again. "I did," he finally replied.
"I see." Severus looked away from Potter's face and stared out at the line of trees in front of them. "I shall announce the happy news to the rest of the school after the holidays, then."
"No!" Potter said shaking his head. "Don't. I... It's not official yet, so..."
"Ah..." Severus said, as if he understood. The only thing he did understand was that the pain in his chest was distracting and the chill in his bones couldn't be blamed on the cold. "Nevertheless, congratulations." He turned to leave, to return to his tower and his fire and his solitude.
"Severus," Potter said. He could feel Potter's fingers touch his shoulder briefly before retreating.
"I have other business to attend to," Severus said, leaving Potter to the snow and the wind.
