The Study Hall on the Edge of Forever
Edith was still in tears as Leonard led her towards the library.
"Honestly, the nerve of that man," Leonard said. "I've never met a more heartless person my life." He looked up and notice the Ravenclaw and Gryffindor waiting for them by the entrance. "Well, a more heartless human," he corrected, shooting a scowl at the Ravenclaw.
"I'll have you know, Leonard," Spock said coolly, "that I am as human as you are. The ears notwithstanding."
"What happened?" Jim said, moving to stand by Edith. "Why are you crying?"
"I believe they had just returned from Defence against the Dark Arts, Jim," Spock said.
"That Snape," Jim said, frowning. He reached into his pocket and handed Edith a handkercheif. "Here," he said gently. Edith smiled weakly.
Spock's generally bland expression darkened a bit at the sight.
"Speaking of ears," Leonard said, looking that the taller boy, "I don't remember them being that pointy."
"I was reading up on human transfiguration," Spock said breezily. "It is merely the result of my experimentations."
"Human Transfiguration?" Edith said, surprised. "Professor McGonagall's going to be furious with you when she finds out."
"None of the professors commented on it?" Leonard said.
"Professor Flitwick thought they were fascinating," Spock said.
"And I think they're pretty unique," Jim said, lightly flicking the tip of Spock's ear in an almost affectionate manner. Spock looked at Jim from the corner of his eye, the lids lowering. He looked almost pleased by the compliment.
Edith frowned a bit, but hid it underneath Jim's handkerchief.
"Well," Leonard said with a shrug, "you're already a bit of a freak. What's one more thing?"
"That's the spirit, Leonard!" Jim said, patting Leonard hard on the shoulder. He draped one arm around Spock's shoulders and the other around Edith's. "Now, let's go. I have a paper due in Astronomy tomorrow."
